This skeletal hooded figure appears in a few myths and cultures from around the world, and he is said to be a bringer of death and doom.
That being said, he may be a bringer of doom but he has a really cool design! We will be learning how to draw a cartoon Grim Reaper
This is a really cool interpretation of this famous figure that we have for you to draw, and we can’t wait to show you how it’s done!
So let’s go ahead and begin this step-by-step guide on how to draw a cartoon Grim Reaper! You’ll definitely want to see this one all the way to the end.
How to Draw A Cartoon Grim Reaper – Let’s Get Started!
We will be drawing a stylized take on this famous character in this guide on how to draw a cartoon Grim Reaper!
This great design features a character that is simultaneously creepy and cute, and we will begin the skeleton head in this first step.
First, we will draw two large, rounded solid black shapes for the eye sockets. These will be rather large to create some personality for this Grim Reaper.
Then, we will create some ‘eyebrows’ above the eyes using some curved lines.
Then, some rounded lines will be used for the top of the skull, and we will add some below the eyes for some cheekbones. Once these are all drawn, we will head to the next step!
This second step of your cartoon Grim Reaper drawing will focus on finishing off the lower half of the head.
For the nose cavity, we will use two thick black lines that connect to one another to form a sort of upside-down heart shape.
Then, you can draw the top of the mouth and then use some more curved lines for the bottom of the jaw.
Finish off by adding some lines for the teeth, and then add a rounded black shape for the gap between the jaw.
Step 3 – Next, add the hood
The Grim Reaper is famous for his black hood, and we shall be adding that in this third step of the guide. We will use some curved lines for the hood surrounding the face.
Then, we will use some more curved and rounded lines to draw the outer outline of the hood. There will be a thin portion flopping down at the back, as shown in the reference image.
That’s all there is to it for now, and then it’s on to step 4!
Step 4 – Now, draw his arms and scythe
Another thing that the Grim Reaper is well known for is his signature scythe that he carries around with him.
We will add this along with his arms in this step of our guide on how to draw a cartoon Grim Reaper!
First, use some curved lines for his shoulders and the sleeves of his cloak. Draw his little hand, and then we will draw the scythe.
The handle is drawn using some simple straight lines, and then you can use some more curved lines for the curved blade of the scythe.
This drawing is looking so cool already, and we will add some more of his cloak in the next step!
Step 5 – Draw more of his cloak
We will be creating a really cool effect for his cloak in this next step. First, draw two very slightly curved lines coming down from under the arms for the sides of his cloak.
Then, we will use some curly lines at the base of these lines to have the end of his cloak looking curly and tattered. It creates a really interesting, cool look for him, as you can see!
Then, we will finish off with some final details in the next step of the guide.
Step 6 – Add the final details to your cartoon Grim Reaper drawing
It’s almost time for the final step of this guide on how to draw a cartoon Grim Reaper, but first we will finish off the outlines of this drawing.
The main aspect will be to draw the rest of the base of his cloak. This will fill in the empty space between the curly parts you just drew, and it will be drawn with some squared, angular shapes.
You can then finish off by adding some straight lines onto the blade of the scythe to make it look more reflective.
Once these details are added, you can add some of your own!
It could be fun to draw a spooky background for this cartoon Grim Reaper, and if you were to do that then what settings can you think of?
Step 7 – Finish off your cartoon Grim Reaper drawing with color
Now we are ready to finish off this cartoon Grim Reaper drawing with some color! In our example image, we used various dark greys and shades of black for the cloak to give it a darker look.
Then, we used light greys for the skull, darker ones for the blade and then some brown for the handle of the scythe.
We think these colors look great, but do you have other colors in mind? This is all about expressing your creativity, so let your creativity flow and see how great it will turn out!
5 Tips To Make Your Grim Reaper Drawing Even Better!
Bring this drawing to life as we show you 5 ways to make it even better!
The first suggestion we have for making your Grim Reaper sketch even better involves adding a background.
He is quite a creepy character, so adding an equally creepy background could be a great way to make this picture look even cooler.
You could draw him in a misty graveyard or maybe a mausoleum. What other settings could you put this guy into?
We added a lot of lines to the gown that the Grim Reaper is wearing, and this helps it look like it is all creased and folded.
This can make it harder to draw, and some people also may not like the image looking this busy.
If you fall into either of those categories, you could remove some of these detail lines for a simpler but still very cool picture!
Previously, we spoke about removing some details from this Grim Reaper drawing, but in this one we will be suggesting the opposite! Instead of removing details, you could add some more to his cloak, skull, scythe or the background behind him. It’s all up to you to decide how you want it to look!
The Grim Reaper is famous for wielding his scythe, and that is what we depicted in this picture. You could also show him with some other accessories as well if you prefer, or you could pose him with other creepy characters of your own design.
This is where you can really get creative, as there are tons of fun details and additions you can come up with.
You may think that you are quite limited with this drawing of a Grim Reaper when it comes to colors, as he is known for his black cloak.
Even if you stick with that black color scheme, you can create some variations with some different mediums or with subtle color details.
For example, you could use some light browns near the base of his cloak to make it look a bit muddy!
